on the way back In 2024, I lost both my father and my first dog, Berger. Because of this, I often describe that year as a "cascade of death." In Korea, we observe a ritual called the 49th-day ceremony (49제), which marks the end of a mourning period. Three days before my father’s 49th-day ceremony, my dog Berger crossed the rainbow bridge—a phrase we use in Korea to describe the passing of a beloved pet. On the 49th day (and chu suk which is korean thanks giving very near day of 49th) after my father’s passing, I visited his grave. On my way back, I stopped by some spots and Sapgyo Lake, a places I had never been to before. I went alone with my camera and captured images in this work. The first photo combines two photographs taken at different times and places. The bottom image was taken on the way to visit my father’s grave, while the top image was taken on the way back. This work is part of my ongoing project, On the Way to, On the Way Back.
